WENTWORTH FOUNDATION OUTREACH PROGRAMME LAUNCH
WE ARE DELIGHTED TO ANNOUNCE THE LAUNCH OF THE WENTWORTH GOLF AND TENNIS FOUNDATION OUTREACH PROGRAMME!
The Wentworth Golf and Tennis Foundation Outreach Programme has delivered a hugely positive impact at Thorpe Lea Primary School and St Lawrence CoE Primary School, engaging up to 35 pupils across term-long programmes of 12 weeks and 10 weeks respectively.
Throughout the outreach terms, children took part in both golf coaching and life skills development, with outstanding results. Eighteen pupils successfully completed both the Golf and Life Skills sections of the programme, earning their badges, while every child who completed the term finished at least one section of their outreach booklet. Each of these pupils was recognised with the appropriate badge and a Wentworth Foundation cap, celebrating their commitment and progress. For the vast majority of participants, this programme marked their first ever experience of golf, with only one or two children having tried the sport previously. By the end of the 12-week programme, every child was able to carry the ball a minimum of 30 yards through the air—a remarkable achievement. Seeing the excitement and pride on the faces of children who initially struggled to make contact, but later watched the ball fly, was incredibly rewarding for both the pupils and coach Sian.
By the final sessions, the children demonstrated growing confidence, clearly explaining the core fundamentals of the golf set-up and confidently identifying the four types of shots they had learned: putting, chipping, pitching and the full shot. The Life Skills element of the programme proved particularly impactful at Thorpe Lea Primary School, with a strong focus on listening, being present and ready to learn, and supporting others. While a small number of children initially found these aspects challenging, Sian was delighted to see their development over the weeks, not only in their golf ability, but in their confidence, focus and willingness to help their peers.
By the end of the programme, over half of the children expressed a strong desire to continue with golf, either within school or externally, highlighting the lasting influence of the outreach initiative. The Wentworth Foundation is now looking forward to returning to both schools during the summer to help deliver summer school festivals, continuing their journey with the sport.
